How High Should You Hang Curtains?
A clear guide to curtain height, width, length, and fullness for windows that look taller and more finished.
Curtains can change the apparent size of a window and the proportion of an entire wall. The most common mistake is mounting the rod directly on the window frame and choosing panels that stop short of the floor.
A higher, wider installation usually makes the room feel taller, lets in more daylight, and gives the window a more intentional presence.
Hang the rod above the frame
A practical starting point is four to six inches above the window frame. If the ceiling is low or the space above the window is limited, place the rod roughly halfway between the frame and ceiling.
Keep the height consistent across windows that share the same wall or sight line.
Extend the rod beyond the glass
Allow the rod to extend about six to twelve inches past each side of the window when space permits. This gives the panels somewhere to rest when open instead of covering valuable glass.
The result is a brighter room and a window that appears wider.
Let panels meet the floor
For a clean everyday look, panels can just touch the floor or hover about half an inch above it. A small break can feel relaxed; a dramatic puddle is harder to maintain and is usually best reserved for low-traffic rooms.
Avoid panels that end several inches above the floor unless you are intentionally using café curtains.
Plan for enough fullness
Curtains should still have soft folds when closed. As a general guide, the combined panel width should be about one-and-a-half to two times the width of the area being covered.
Thin, flat panels can make even expensive fabric look skimpy.
Check function before drilling
Confirm the panels clear radiators, furniture, air vents, and floor registers. Use sturdy anchors and a center support for wider spans.
If privacy is important, pair decorative panels with a shade so each layer can do one job well.
Mount higher and wider than the window frame, use enough fabric to create folds, and choose a length that intentionally meets the floor.
